Paper Mill Operations Manager

Industry Segment: Pulp & Paper

We are seeking an Operations Manager to oversee manufacturing in an industrial paper mill located in Wisconsin.  Our client is a world-class leader in paper and packaging with mills and packaging plants throughout the US and the Americas.

The Operation Manager is responsible for safety, quality, productivity, cost efficiency, capital/continuous improvement initiatives and all other aspects of the operations; including the training and development of hourly and salaried personnel.  This position reports directly to the General Manager and is a key member of the Mill Leadership Team, responsible for delivering results and helping set the direction and vision for the mill.

Location: Wisconsin

Responsibilities:

  • Leading a clean and efficient paper manufacturing operation
  • Supervising salaried and hourly personnel
  • Managing daily paper machine(s) and other assigned equipment and processes to achieve quality and productivity goals
  • Being a champion for safety across the mill
  • Conducting any incident investigations (safety, quality, productivity, unexpected downtime time, etc.)
  • Training and development efforts
  • Managing staff and holding people accountable – administering corrective actions when necessary
  • Troubleshooting quality and operational issues
  • Collaborating with the mill maintenance teams for troubleshooting, planning, and execution of maintenance and repairs
  • Overseeing the planning and scheduling of maintenance and contracted services
  • Determining opportunities for improvement
  • Leading Continuous Improvement initiatives and implementing solutions for production problems
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of papermaking
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or industrial related field
  • Minimum of 5 years management experience in the paper industry
  • Minimum of 7 to 10 years of paper making experience
  • Paperboard and/or recycled fiber pulping experience is highly desirable
  • Experience in a unionized environment is helpful but not required
  • Strong understanding of root causes and experience developing systems and processes to avoid reoccurrence
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Proven problem solver with excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills and an attention to detail
  • Proficient computer skills
